Description
-----------
AOL•RMailFix is a drop application that sets the dates and shows the parties involved in America Online received mail (RMail) files. Files “fixed” by AOL•RMailFix are much easier to manage using the Finder.
AOL•RMailFix does not physically change the contents of the RMail file, it modifies the creation date and modification date of the file to match the date that the RMail was actually sent (as opposed to when saved,) as well as setting the Finder’s “Get Info” for the file to contain the subject of the document, who sent it, and who were the recipients. This makes sorting by date and searching using the Finder’s “Find” command a powerful tool for managing your AOL received mail files.
AOL•RMailFix is also useful when archiving RMail previously saved in your FlashMail “Incoming Mail” box. Normally, when saved these RMail items are dated the date you saved the RMail, which may be months after the file was received. After running AOL•RMailFix, the RMail will reflect its correct age.
AOL•RMailFix is also handy when trying to eliminate duplicate saved RMail items. If the date and time and GetInfo’s for two different RMails are exactly the same, they are duplicate and one can be deleted. (We hope to automate this in the future--send in your Shareware fee!)
Using AOL•RMailFix
------------------
With System 7.0:
1. Select the icons of the RMail files (or folders containing RMail files) to be fixed.
2. Drag them over the AOL•RMailFix icon until it highlights.
3. Let go of the mouse/trackball button.
AOL•RMailFix will open and you’ll see a progress dialog showing how process is going.
With System 6.0.5 or higher (or for those who prefer a direct way to expand their files):
1. Double click on the AOL•RMailFix icon.
2. Choose the “Fix mail file” command from the File menu.
3. Select the file to be fixed.
4. Click the “Open” button.
A progress dialog will appear, showing you how the process is going.
5. Return to step 2 to expand fix more files or choose “Quit” from the File menu to exit AOL•RMailFix.
Caveats
-------
* We have not tested “fixing” files saved by versions of America Online previous to version 2.0--convert old RMail files with caution.
* You can’t select a folder using the “Fix mail file” command - yet!
* Finder comments in GetInfo are only 4 lines high, but the arrow keys and the mouse can move around so that you can see more.
* Finder comments have a maximum length of 200 characters, so some really long and complicated addressing may be truncated.
* If the times on your files look incorrect (off by about the time zone difference between here and England :-), open the Map control panel and set your location, and “fix” the files again.
* You can’t drag files to AOL•RMailFix if the application is on a floppy.
* For some reason, the Finder will only allow one file to be dropped on an application from a floppy. You can select several, but only one of them will be processed.
* Sometimes the Finder does not have enough memory to search comments, and will ask you to close windows (even though you may not have many open!) We are not sure exactly what the problem is, but if you make sure that no single folder has more than 100 or so items in it (by using sub-folders,) or if you increase the Finder’s size resource using ResEdit, the problem may go away.
* If you are using Apple’s “Easy Open” system extension, dropping multiple RMail files on AOL•RMailFix will sometimes cause Easy Open to ask you if you want to open each and every file, separately! We are not how to avoid this other than only dragging folders into AOL•RMailFix.
